Dr. Osamu Shimomura was awarded The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2008 for "The discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP", jointly with Dr. Martin Chalfie and Dr. Roger Y. Tsien. The museum, located at the Hakuyo-Kaikan building beside School of Phamacy, was set up to praise his acheivement and to make his works accessible for the public and for young scientists who follow him.

On March 22, 2009, the award ceremony for Nagasaki University honorary doctorate was held and Dr. Shimomura gave the memorial lecture at Nagasaki University. On the same day, the opening ceremony of this museum was held with the president of Nagasaki University , the dean of school of pharmacy and Dr. and Mrs. Shimomura (bottom picture). The museum exhibits many important items including his first scientific article and documents he had owned.

Replica Medal

The Laureates are allowed to order up to 3 replica medals. One of the precious replicas is exhibited with the certificate in the museum. On April 7, 2010, the replica medal was directly hand overred from Dr. Shimomura to Dr. Katamine, the president of Nagasaki University.

Jellyfish-Captureing Net

The jellyfish-captureing net exhibited in the museum is the original one which Dr. Shimomura had used and owned. The net, which is colored with orange and black (the Princeton University color), is very firm and evokes his figure capturereing tons of jellyfishes.

The team of Dr. Shimomura had captured about 100,000 jellyfishes (!!) from 1967 to 1988. The T-shirt was made to celebrate the team in the final year. A big jellyfish on the T-shirt was illustrated by his daughter.

Scientific Papers

His first article and the key article for the Nobel award were exhibited. During the era in the Nagasaki University, he developed isolation methods of inorganic metals under supervision of Professor Yasunaga (Analytical Chemistry for Pharmaceuticals). These works were published as 6 articles and 1 commentary in the journal of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan.
