Introduction to NUSP

Nagasaki University

Nagasaki University, located in a region that geographically faces the Asian Continent across the East China Sea, possesses the history and memory of Dejima and is invested with a unique mission by the atomic bombing.
On November 12, 1857, Dutch army surgeon Pompe van Meerdervoort initiated medical lectures in the Dutch language to government doctor Ryojyun Matsumoto and 11 other persons. This medical school called Igaku Denshusho is the origin of today's School of Medicine as well as Nagasaki University.

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences

The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (NUSP) is originally established in 1890 as the Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Medicine, the Fifth Higher Middle School. The NUSP is one of the oldest pharmacy schools in Japan. The school have developed specialists in fields of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences. Dr. Osamu Shimomura who was awarded The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2008 for "The discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP" is our senior who graduated in 1951 from the Nagasaki Medical Specialized School, Division on Pharmaceutical Sciences (later School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nagasaki University). Nagasaki (Japanese: 長崎, "Long Cape") is the capital and the largest city of Nagasaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan. It became the sole port used for trade with the Portuguese and Dutch during the 16th through 19th centuries and the Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region have been recognized and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Goto Islands

The Goto is a remote islands area, located in a western sea of Nagasaki. The Goto islands have beautiful nature and unique history and culture of Catholic. The NUSP carries out the Rito Jisshu as advanced clinical training for pharmacy students.
